Inspired by... a Nail Art Contest

It seems to me like this past week was dedicated to nail art contests.. this was not on purpose but I needed to get my entries in before I start my 31 day challenge (keep an eye out, it begins May 1st!)

Personally, I love nail art contests.. not because you can win cool prizes, but because they give me motivation to come up with awesome nail art. They also provide me a structured theme, which is always great because I waste hours on end just deciding what to paint on my nails, let alone the time I spend painting them.

I am entering this mani into Lippy Lucie's nail art contest.. the theme is "Inspired by...". This contest did not narrow a theme down for me because you could be inspired by anything.. but it still motivated me to come up with something creative. Lucie's rules were as follows:

So I would like you guys to create a nail art inspired by something!  It could be absolutely anything you like.. a fabric, pattern, place, food, celebrity, an event.. absolutely anything, as long as you let me know what your inspiration was!!

1. The contest is open Internationally!
2. I would love your design to be freehand but stamping is allowed
3. No decals allowed
4. You must let me know what your design was inspired by and if possible send me a pic of the inspiration
5. The nail art design must be on at least 4 finger nails
6. The nail art design must be on actual nails on a real persons hand!  Acrylics and extensions are allowed though!
7. Each person may submit only one nail design
8. The contest begins today (April 4th) and will end on the 5th May at midnight
9. The contest will be judged by myself and 2 of my friends and the winner will be our favourite, most original and creative design!

I was inspired by my new tank top with a cute tribal design on the front..

Welcome sunshine!

The weather here has been beautiful the last few days!! (yes.. in St. John's, Newfoundland.. believe it or not) So I haven't gotten much done in terms of nail art.

However, my aunt and her two lovely daughters, Phoebe and Mackenzie, came over on Sunday to have their nails done before heading to Cuba :)  (how lucky!) The girls have been featured on my blog before, during our slumber party.

Phoebe chose to have this tutorial recreated on her hands.
The base is Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Whirlwind White, I sponged on Sally Hansen Salon Manicure Calypso Blue. The starfish are painted on using Sally Hansen Salon Manicure Kook-a-mango and Orly Coffee break.

I'm so jealous of her naturally long, and super strong nails!

My aunt wanted flip flops on her nails.. and when she saw my seahorse stamp she had to have that too :)

Base is Sally Hansen Salon Manicure Kook-a-mango
I sponged Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Sun Kissed and Insta Dri Lightening on the accent nail.
The flip flops were freehand using Finger Paints black expressionism, Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Whirlwind White, Sally Hansen New Lengths City Lights and a couple of rhinestones to top it off :)

Mackenzie just came over to hang out, and all in all it was a very fun day! Now they are all down in Cuba and I'm sure they are having much more fun that I am at work and studying for exams..

The Versatile Blogger Award

A few weeks ago I was tagged for the Versatile Blogger Award by not one, but two lovely ladies! :)

Lucie from Lippy Lucie    and   Sue from Creative Nail Design by Sue

Although the award was the same, the rules from each of these ladies was different.
(Click the link to see the award post)
From Lucie's blog I am supposed to tag 5 bloggers with under 200 followers.
From Sue's blog I am supposed to tag 15 bloggers, and include 7 random facts about myself.

Tag back to those who tagged me and of course thank them!!
And Let those that I tagged know that I did.

I decided to combine each set of rules and tag 5 worthy ladies, and list 7 random facts about myself.

7 Random Facts:

1. I was a competitive swimmer for 12 years (3 of which I swam for university). I quit back in october because I got sick of it, and then took up nail art and blogging... I never looked back.
2. My favourite animal is a tiger. When I was a kid I wanted to be a tiger (not lion) tamer.
3. My favourite movie is V for Vendetta
4. Grey's Anatomy makes me want to be a surgeon (If only it was that easy)
5. I froze my tongue to a pole when I was 10 because I was curious. (I was that kid!)
6. I grew up in Wabush, Labrador, Canada. School didn't close until it was -55°Celcius!
7. If I won the lottery I would go back to teaching children swimming lessons (It is an amazingly rewarding job!)

Once again, it was very difficult to find 5 blogs under 200 followers that hadn't already received this award... but I managed to find 5 lovely ladies I think deserve it, and who haven't received it already (I hope!)

I also decided to include a mani from each of these lovely ladies' blogs so that you can see how talented they are! (If anyone has a problem with me posting a photo from their blog let me know and I will remove it immediately)

In no particular order:

Happy Easter

I did this manicure earlier last week because I knew I would be too busy this weekend to do it and get the post up.. so I saved it for today (a rainy day?)

I started with American Apparel Office (thumb), Rimmel Lasting Finish Pro Wild Orchid (index), Finger Paints lemon sour (middle), Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Blue-Away (ring) and Sally Hansen Wet&Wild True Love (pinky)

With various dotting tools I added Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Whilrwind White to all but the bunny nail.
Then I used a brush to paint the silhouette of the bunny.
Thumb to Pinky Darker colors are:
 American Apparel Malibu Green
 Orly Charged Up
 Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Lightening
 Gosh Blue Balloon
Sally Hansen Salon Manicure Back to the Fuchsia

Before the Matte top coat..

Then I topped it all off with a coat of Essie Matte About You

After the matte top coat (a little bit of color "bleeding")

Sadly, I am working on a paper all day today instead of enjoying this lovely holiday, that I used to adore as a child.. nonetheless, Happy Easter to you all!! :)

I ❤ Cadbury Creme Eggs!

What's your favourite easter treat?  Mine would have to be Cadbury Creme Eggs. Especially, the cadbury creme egg McFlurry at McDonalds.. guilty pleasure. I practically mark the date on my calendar when these delicious treats start showing up in stores.

So.. while contemplating what easter nails I was going to do, they were the first thing that came to mind.

This took a LONG time! lol And it is my first ever manicure with words on it, which was the trickiest part.. but I'm so so pleased with how this mani turned out in the end. I was also happy and surprised that I found two old polishes that matched the creme eggs colors (red and purple).

Red is Sally Hansen New Lengths Red Ambition
Purple is Rimmel London 60seconds Night Before
Silver lining is Sally Hansen New Lengths City Lights
Yellow is Sally Hansen Insta Dri Lightening
I also used white acrylic paint for the "egg splat" before using the yellow.

And, just for your reading pleasure, PimpThatSnack.com did The Creme de la Creme Egg
Yes, a jumbo version of your everyday creme egg to scale! with the creme center and everything!
Click the link to see how they did it!

The vital statistics:
Standard creme egg : Height : 2" Girth : 4" Weight : 40 g Calories : 175
Creme de la creme egg : Height : 8". Girth : 16.5". Weight : A whopping 2.25 kg!! Calories : estimated 10000!!

Birds of a Feather (2.0)

For those of you who did not see my original Birds of a Feather mani a few days ago, click here. I loved that mani so much, I just had to continue with the rest of my nails. I did this the day after I wore the other mani, but I'm only getting around to posting it today. It's been a very busy week.

I removed the polish from the other mani, but left the accent nail, and just continued to feather the others! :)

Birds of a feather

I came across a feather nail art tutorial on Polish Ninja recently, and knew I had to try it! I didn't have a lot of time so I only did a feather accent nail, but you can look forward to me doing a full feather manicure in the future :)

The feathers came from the craft section at wal mart. I used Sally Hansen Cafe Au Lait as the base for the accent nail. Then I painted the nail with itsSoEasy Rhinestone glue from Sally Beauty and placed the feather on while still wet. Once it dried I trimmed the feather with clippers and topped it off with inm Out the Door Fast drying top coat (2 coats). When it was completely dry I used a nail file to shape up the feather at the tip of the nail (worked like a charm).

The other nails are Nina Ultra Pro Molten Copper

Right hand, apologies for the wimpy middle nail. It chipped a little while ago, I can't bring myself to shorten the rest.

Now.. back to writing my paper :(
