Time Warp Challenge: I remember when...

... and where, and what I was doing on September 11, 2001.

It's not a happy moment in history, but it is a monumental one that will never be forgotten. And since the 11th anniversary just passed I thought this would be appropriate for today's manicure.

I was in grade 6 and my teacher came back to class after lunch and told us what was happening. After school I went home I found my parents glued to the TV. The horrific videos of the planes crashing into the towers was on every channel. My mom tried to explain what was happening the best way she could. I did not understand the politics behind it, or what it would mean for the US for years to come... but I did understand that many people lost loved ones and I was both sad and afraid for how they must have felt.

Today's manicure is inspired by the cover of the New Yorker from September 24th, 2001. From the news stands it looked like an all black cover... but when you took a closer look it had the silhouette of the twin towers on it.

“9/11/2001” by Art Spiegelman and Fran├žoise Mouly, September 24, 2001

Ten years later, Francoise Mouly explains how she came up with such an idea...

“Ten years ago, my husband, the cartoonist Art Spiegelman, our daughter, and I stood four blocks away from the second tower as we watched it collapse in excruciatingly slow motion. Later, back in my office, I felt that images were suddenly powerless to help us understand what had happened. The only appropriate solution seemed to be to publish no cover image at all—an all-black cover. Then Art suggested adding the outlines of the two towers, black on black. So from no cover came a perfect image, which conveyed something about the unbearable loss of life, the sudden absence in our skyline, the abrupt tear in the fabric of reality.”

My pictures are a little yellow/off color but it was the only way I could get a good photo of the designs on the matte black.

My thumb and ring finger were done using Finger Paints Black Expressionism. I used Essie Matte About You and then painted the towers and 9.11.01 using a nail art brush.

The middle and pinky have a base coat of Finger Paints Paper Mache. Then I stamped with China Glaze Adventure Red-Y and Mash-46.

The index nail is a base of Barry M Cobalt Blue. Then I stamped with Finger Paints Paper Mache and Mash-49
